WALKERBOUTS INN - Rhodes is a spacious haven with comfortable accommodation in 6 bedrooms each with en-suite facilities. We offer fine country cuisine and hospitality in the best traditions of the "Platteland".

The relaxed and hospitable atmosphere makes it a veritable home-from-home where you can kick off your shoes and feel free to be yourself! As far as catering is concerned, as weather permits we source as many of our kitchen requirements from our own garden where we grow fresh herbs and vegetables. Locally grown, succulent chicken, lamb and beef add to the rural expereience.

Located in the historic village of Rhodes which is situated at the southernmost tip of the Drakensberg mountain range, 16km due south of the border with the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. The village is more that 1800m above sea level, located on the banks of the Bell River.

The nearest town is Barkly East which is 60km away on a narrow and winding gravel road that must be driven with care. Thus, Rhodes is a remote village almost frozen in time, a relic from the past. The unique nature of the architecture in the village finds its origins in the Victorian era and is a compromise between fashion, availability of materials and practicality.

As of July 1997 the village was proclaimed a National Monument.

All of our rooms have a double and a single bed and two "Family Rooms" have an additional single bed each. All have wall-mounted panel heaters and the beds are all fitted with electric blankets to ward off the winter chill.

How to get there


From Barkly East take the R396 to Rhodes. On arrival, turn right at the first intersection into De Wet Street, continue to the second corner and turn right into Vorster Street. Continue for ± 250m to our front door.

From Maclear take the R396 to Rhodes via the Pot River Pass, Elands Heights and the Naudesnek Pass. On arrival in Rhodes, follow the main road past the SAPS station, turn right into Muller Street, continue and cross the bridge over the Tinternspruit.

Immediately after the bridge turn left into De Wet Street, take second right into Vorster Street and continue ± 250m to our front door.
