Lesotho

The Kingdom of Lesotho is a small, land-locked country situated in the high mountainous region of central Southern Africa.

With it's capital and business centre of Maseru, Lesotho is home to the Basuto Tribe of Southern Africa who reside in the many villages scatterred in the highlands of the Lesotho Drakensberg. During recent years, the road system has improved substantially, largely to obtain access to (and build) the massive Katse Dam, an extremely important part of the Southern African water supply system, also to reach the important mineral areas within the Kingdom. Tourism access is usually from the Eastern Free State through the town of Ficksburg which has many accommodation options for travellers or even approach from the other side (North East) the Southern Southern African Drakensberg, all part of the adventure that surrounds this high lying mountain Kingdom. If it's bird watching; fishing; hiking and some adventurous activities thay you're after, then Lesotho is a wonderful destination. The snow capped mountains (and often more) offer stunning panorama's as do the unique characteristics of this unusual but awesome country, a unique African holiday experience.

Many accommodation options exist in Maseru, with fewer options in the hinterland. It is seriously recommended however that visitors obtain more detail from the appropriate tourism offices and consider a four-wheel drive vehicle and adequate preparation, particularly if the intention is to move from the tar road infrastructure.

As we sit back and watch how the world changes around us and mankind slowly erodes the more rural or natural environment, it's nice to know that, aside from the main roads and cities where African suburbia is noisily normal, a little piece of the old-world exists at it's basic best. Not for the faint hearted but certainly for the traveller wanting an experience with a difference.
