The Karoo

Cango Caves, Oudtshoorn With the towns of Graaff Reinet, Oudtshoorn (Western Cape) and Cradock as the population centers, the arid, semi-desert region of the Karoo remains one of the Eastern Cape's most popular destinations.

Situated inland and including the Western interior of the Eastern Cape and the Eastern interior of the Western Cape, the Karoo is a central destination for travellers in all directions. The region is famed for it's bio-diversity and offers the visitor an array of eco-tourism opportunities. From the Karoo Nature Reserve; monuments in their hundreds; the Valley of Desolation in Graaff Reinette where the harshness of the South African sunshine is typified, to the annual cultural festival held in Oudtshoorn this region is fast losoing it's transit identity and become a favoured destination.

The South African fynbos, the largest floral kingdom in the world, the Mountain Zebra National Park, one of the best game parks in South Africa and the harsh beauty of the semi-desert an eco-tourism delight.

Oudtshoorn
Oudtshoorn is an ideal stop over between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town for something a little different. Famous for the Cango Caves, a vast underground network of caves decorated with stallactites and stallcmites in the most beautiful shapes and colours, Oudtshoorn is the home of Ostrich farming in Southern Africa, the crocodile farm and the wonderful and friendly hospitality found only in the Klein Karoo.

Arriving in the town of Oudtshoorn is a little like an oasis in a desert, this quaint town springs upon you after the beauty of the desertlike surroundings. Built around the Grobbelaars River with a full selection of accommodation able to cater for all tastes.

Graaff Reinet
What was once a small village and home of a farming community is now one of South Africas most historical and traditional small towns. Steeped in history and having escaped modernisation, GR is known as the gem of the Karoo and has become a sought after destination for those wishing to revisit both Afrikaaner and farming culture of yesteryear.

With a lovely array of Bed & Breakfast accommodation in historical homes GR is a wonderful base from which to explore the region and to experience Karoo holspitality.
