The area must be the most well kept secret as far as holiday destinations in South Africa go, the sunniest area in the country and the most moderate climate along the coast. A short drive from the region takes one to the Addo Elephant Park, now boasting the big five as far as game is concerned, this is supported by the many privately owned game reserves in the Grahamstown area.
It's difficult to describe the beauty of this region and hard to believe that it has escaped the condominiums and hi-rise developments more commonly associated with tourism destinations throughout the world. Whilst still offering visitors the fun and excitement in the towns, this region offers the visitor a complete package catering for all needs and offerring many accommodation options.
Tourists are offered every amenity from the larger cities of Port Elizabeth and East London to the in the relaxing environments of Port Alfred; Kenton-on-sea; Bushmans River Mouth and Kidds Beach.

Port Elizabeth information
Founded in the late 1700's with the arrival of the British settlers, Port Elizabeth is known as the Friendly City and is blessed with both history and beauty. From the un-spoilt beaches and the wonderful beachfront area to the historic Fort Frederick and Donkin Reserve, named after Sir Rufane Donkin and his wife Elizabeth.
Port Elizabeth has a wonderful oceanarium and dolphinarium. The museum, snake park and world class competition golf courses make the area a tourist treat. From scuba diving to fishing, Port Elizabeth and its regions are certainly a place to visit. Don't miss the dolphin show and one of the worlds most succesful dolphin breeding programmes. Port Elizabeth is home of the University of Port Elizabeth, know as the campus by the sea, Port Elizabeth offers activities for all ages. An awesome array of restuarants cater for everyones tastes and the Boardwalk Casino is situated on the beachfront for the adventurous. The beach front in Port Elizabeth has been beautifully laid out and it could arguably be claimed to be the best of them all when compared to other bigger cities. Port Elizabeth has excellent schools and is a lovely city to visit.
East London (Buffalo City Mun.) information
Still reasonably undiscovered by the leisure visitors, one wonders why. East London is a wonderful holiday destination, one of the few that offers everything to everyone without the hustle, bustle and congestion of the larger South African cities.
East London is the second biggest town in the Eastern Cape, gateway to the Sunshine Coast and Wild Coast Areas. Home to the East London Golf Club, venue for numerous tournaments including the SA Open (www.elgc.co.za) and the Africa Cup Golf tournament, now a European Tour sanctioned event. East London is famous for it's beaches and also for having the only river port in Southern Africa along the mouth of the Buffalo River. East London is growing year after year as holiday makers start appreciating this wonderful town. The Nahoon and Eastern Beaches are simply stunning with the Nahoon Beach and Gonubie Beach having recently been granted the international "Blue Flag" status. East London has it all, from the wonderful malls and shopping centre's during inclement weather to the beaches in the sunshine. There is a tourism information kiosk at the city hall and on the beach front.
Being a gateway to the diversified areas nearby, a short drive to Bisho, the administrative capital of the Eastern Cape, this is an ideal base for a holiday. The Wild Coast region from Kei Mouth where onbe can rent a holiday house at an extremely competitive price; the trout fishing waters of the Rhodes, Stutterheim and Maclear areas and the most interesting coastline are all within reach. East London is also home to the Daimler Manufacturing Plant and the home to many settlers of German and European descent. The nearby towns with names like Cathcart, Queenstown, Berlin and Stutterheim are all legacies from the settler era.
Port Alfred information
Travelling from East London, visit the luxury of the Royal Port Alfred Marina, one of South Africa's first and most successful marinas with every home having it's own private jetty, and the beauty of this coastal town make Port Alfred a dream destination for a family holiday. Port Alfred boasts it's own golf course and is a short drive from the Fish River Sun Golf Course, a top ten golf course in immaculate condition. For golfers, this is enough of a reason to visit this area. Add the one and a half hour drive to the East London Golf Club and the region becomes a golfers paradise.
With accommodation to suit any need and activities for everyone including hiking; river and sea fishing; sporting activities and scuba diving, this is truly a top destination. Port Alfred is an ideal base from which to visit the Addo Elephant Park; Grahamstown and the Arts Festival and the historic pineapple farming areas of Bathhurst.
Addo Elephant Park information
A short drive from the coast lies the Addo Elephant Park. Deep within the shadows of the dense valley bushveld of the Sundays River region of the Eastern Cape lies the Addo Elephant National Park. Here, the evenings are punctuated by the strident howl of the black-backed jackal, and the francolin's call heralds each new dawn. Safe from relentless persecution in the past, the grey leviathans of the bush now roam in peace. The original Elephant section of the park was proclaimed in 1931, when only eleven elephants remained in the area - today this finely tuned ecosystem is sanctuary to over 350 elephants, 280 Cape buffalo, black rhino, a variety of antelope species, as well as the unique flightless dung beetle, found almost exclusively in Addo.
Recently expanded, the Addo National Elephant Park is now a 492 000 ha (1,2 million acre) malaria free park, this expansion has transformed Addo into the ultimate tourism destination. Some of its unique features now include:
- Unrivalled natural diversity, with five of South Africa's seven major vegetation zones (biomes).
- The Big 7 (Elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, whales and great white sharks in their natural habitat.
- A 120 000 ha (296 500 acre) marine reserve that includes islands that are home to the world's largest African penguins and gannets.

Between Port Alfred and Port Elizabeth lie the two small river fronted villages of Kenton and Bushmans. Surrounding to typical Eastern Cape rivers, these towns are quiet and quaint, ideal for a relaxing family holiday. Mgwalana
This as a small resort village between East London and Port Alfred. Away from the city bustle, a wonderful place to escape it all and enjoy quiet times fishing and walking. I simply can't think of words to describe Mgwalana and Mtati, other than to say these are really examples of what most of us wish for, a little slice of heaven!
Mtati
Next door to Mgwalana lies Mtati, a little closer to Port Alfred and 5 minutes from Mgwalana.
